Generic or Core Areas of Study

These are essential areas of study that are common to many of the syllabi and are therefore transferable.


Electricity | Health & Hygiene | Skin Structure & Function | Skin Diseases
Hair | Nails | Business Studies | Salon Procedure | Nutrition


Some of these nine areas of study are repeated across different diplomas. If a candidate has already studied any of these areas within a CIBTAC qualification, they are exempt from the study hours on any new course.


The candidate will need to revise these areas, however, in order to prepare for the final theoretical examination.


ELECTRICITY

Minimum Study Time:

  • 2 Hours

This may be split into 1 hour of contact and 1 hour of additional study time.


HEALTH & HYGIENE

Minimum Study Time:

  • 3 Hours

This may be split into 2 hours of contact and 1 hour of additional study time.

Candidates should be aware of the importance of hygiene and be familiar with the ways of preventing cross infection and contamination in order to maintain hygienic conditions within the salon.

Areas of Study:

  • Definition specific related terms
  • Knowledge of micro-organisms
  • Methods of sterilisation
  • Knowledge of Hepatitis and HIV
  • National & local legislation in relation to hygiene within the working environment
  • Awareness of first aid procedure for related problems


SKIN STRUCTURE & FUNCTION

Minimum Study Time:

  • 2 Hours

This may be split into 1 hour of contact and 1 hour of additional study time.

Candidates must have a detailed knowledge of the structure and functions of the skin.

Areas of Study:

  • Structure of the skin
  • Functions of the skin
  • Factors affecting the skin
  • Appendages of the skin


SKIN DISEASES

Minimum Study Time:

  • 4 Hours

This may be split into 2 hours of contact and 2 hours of additional study time.

Candidates should be able to describe and recognise common skin disorders/diseases, define related terminology and be aware of their implications to salon treatments. Candidates should also be able to identify primary and secondary lesions.

Areas of Study:

  • Client care/advice/referral
  • Definition of specific skin disorders and diseases to include causes, description and treatment awareness.


HAIR

Minimum Study Time:

  • 2 Hours

This may be split into 1 hour of contact and 1 hour of additional study time.

Candidates should be able to describe the structure and function of the hair, know the position of the different hair structures and cycle of hair growth and define related terminology.

Areas of Study:

  • Structure of the hair
  • Functions of the hair
  • Definition of different types
  • Definition of specific related terminology
  • The hair growth cycle


NAILS

Minimum Study Time:

  • 2 Hours

This may be split into 1 hour of contact and 1 hour of additional study time.

Candidates should be able to describe the structure, growth and function of the nail, know the position of the different nail structures and be able to describe and recognise common nail diseases.

Areas of Study:

  • Structure of the nail
  • Growth of the nail
  • Functions of the nail
  • Nail diseases & disorders


BUSINESS STUDIES

Minimum Study Time:

  • 4 Hours

This may be split into 2 hours of contact and 2 hours of additional study time.

Candidates should be aware of the different types of employment and have knowledge of the factors involved in setting up and running a business.

Areas of Study:

  • Advantages & disadvantages of the different types of employment within the industry
  • Starting up a salon
  • Choice of premises
  • Legal aspects relating to treatment and consumer legislation
  • Planning the layout of a salon
  • Calculating treatment charges
  • Employment of staff – recruitment & selection
  • Home visiting practice
  • Basic business terminology
  • Marketing
  • Ethics & professional conduct
  • Stock control


SALON PROCEDURES

Minimum Study Time:

  • 4 Hours

This may be split into 2 hours of contact and 2 hours of additional study time.

Candidates should be aware of the salon procedures involved in the running of a successful business.

Areas of Study:

  • Reception skills
  • Salon procedures
  • Marketing Minimum Training Hours


NUTRITION

Minimum Study Time:

  • 4 Hours

This may be split into 2 hours of contact and 2 hours of additional study time.

Candidates should be aware of the elements of a balanced diet, current trends and new concepts in nutrition, disorders caused by deficiency of nutrients and the needs of different individuals. Candidates should know the principles of a weight reducing diet and be familiar with the associated eating disorders. They should be able to care for food appropriately and be aware of those foods most likely to cause allergies.

  • Food allergies & intolerance
  • Principles of different weight reducing diets
